Courage To Stand - Celebrating LGBT Military Service

This historic event will be the kickoff to the 2012 Sacramento Gay Pride Weekend. The event will showcase the stories of LGBT service members whom served before, during, and after the Dont Ask, Dont Tell (DADT) policy era. Presented in collaboration with the Sacramento Valley Veterans the event will be held at Citizen Hotel on the 1st of June, at 7:00pm. Styled after an officers club cocktail party with hors d'oeuvres and hosted wine seating will be available, but this event will not be a sit-down dinner. International opera singer Zachary Gordin and pianist Jim Jordan will perform a special musical dedication, adapted from poetry by Walt Whitman. Clint Brozoni (who studied with Pulitzer Prize-winning composer David Del Tredici) is composing the piece. The Sacramento Gay & Lesbian Center presents Courage to Stand as an opportunity for civilians to obtain a glimpse of what life was like for our military brethren whom served in silence. They will share personal details of their lives under this discriminatory policy, and the various ways each dealt with life, love, camaraderie, and service. Please join us as they open their hearts and our eyes to the effect that changing this policy has had in their lives. These stories will be read by the service members themselves or by members of the LGBT community. In the winter of 2010, Congress voted to repeal the law ending 18 years of discrimination. On December 22, 2010 President Obama signed the Dont Ask, Dont Tell Repeal Act of 2010, ushering in a new sense of freedom for those very individuals that fight or have fought for the freedoms of all Americans. No longer would LGBT service members fear for their careers, and in some cases, lives.
