The color red, found on the red ribbon, serves as a global symbol of HIV/AIDS awareness. That symbol is manifested in the required wearing of a red dress by all guests, regardless of age, gender, or sexual orientation at the Red Dress Party. The sea of red created serves as a powerful statement of solidarity with people living with HIV/AIDS and also reminds us that we are all brought together for one night to raise awareness and funds to support organizations that promote LGBT community health with a specific focus on preventing new HIV infections and supporting those who are affected by HIV/AIDS.
Sixty percent of youth ages 13-24 with HIV don't know they are infected and young gay and bisexual men account for 72 percent of new infections. A hugely disproportionate number of these new infections are among homeless and marginalized youth who feel forced into situations where they are at grave risk of infection. In addition to condom distribution, regular testing, and early treatment these young people need to be supported with access to basic needs resources, a place where they can feel safe and welcome amongst peers, and encouragement to learn skills that enable them to make positive life choices as they grow up.
The Sacramento LGBT Community Center and its community partner, Sunburst Projects, whose missions support this work, are the beneficiaries of funds raised through the Sacramento Red Dress Party. The Center provides HIV and sex education, access to free HIV testing, referrals to HIV/AIDS healthcare, distributes safe sex kits, houses the Strength in Numbers peer support network, and supports homeless and vulnerable lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans*, queer, intersex, asexual, two spirit and allied youth through the Q-Spot Drop-In Center and weekly youth groups. Sunburst works to keep families together by providing services that strengthen and empower individuals, families, and communities to ensure youth living with HIV/AIDS reach their highest potential through Camp Sunburst, teen and young adult services, childcare services, mental health services, support groups for HIV positive women, family-centered medical case management, and HIV/AIDS prevention and education.
We hope you will join us in support of this work by sponsoring, helping to promote, or attending the Sacramento Red Dress Party. This community event attracts close to 500 people as diverse as Sacramento itself by creating an atmosphere of pure fun as a backdrop for its true purpose, to improve the health and wellness of our community and end the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
While the exact origins of The Red Dress Party are unknown Sacramento's is modeled after those in Portland and Seattle. The earliest Portland event started out as a small band of committed supporters throwing a house party and has grown to a grand scale that today welcomes more than 2,000 attendees each year. Now in its third year in Sacramento, Red Dress continues to grow by leaps and bounds. The red dress network of parties now includes Chicago, Palm Springs, and New Orleans.
All guests will be blown away by the transformation of the familiar Badlands nightclub for one night only into an exclusive wonderland of pure fun. The Red Dress Party experience will include the internationally recognized DJs never before seen in Sacramento, drag performances, live character crowd performers, go-go boys/girls, and much more throughout the evening.
